Visitors come to your site seeking something.  They end up at your site because you have an answer to that thing they are looking for.  As long as you don’t lose sight of this you will attract traffic.

Jim  James sees an ad in his favorite car magazine. He decides to visit the website in the ad. During the website visit he reads a Ford Mustang article. The end of the article has a web form, which he fills out to receive updates on the Mustang. He exits the website.  A week later Jim receives an email about the Mustang. He opens the email and clicks the link inside the email then is taken to a web page.

Automation Conclusion

Each step in the example above is automated. When Jim fills out his name on the web form he is put into a stream. Stream rules determine what to do next; which is send email 1. Opening the email triggers the next set of rules in essence pushing further down the stream.

Internet marketing or online marketing is reaching customers on the internet at the right time. The ability to find customers without being intrusive.  Talking to customers with a custom message while seeming general. It’s like finding a needle in a hay stack.

There’s a vast number of internet users.  Marketers need to interact with visitors to understand their intentions. Deploy digital ads to pull visitors to your website.  Measure visitors that come in and determine their interests.  Measuring can be done in different ways.  You can use Google Analytics or your CMS (Content Management System) if it supports it.

The cost of online marketing makes it attractive.  You can get into online marketing pretty much for free. It depends on what platform type you decide to try.  While starting out you should try to spend no money.  Learn what works while it costs nothing and then adjust.

Their are multiple ways to perform online marketing. Use social media like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram or Google+. Each platform has its own advantages. Digital marketing can be free. You can use Facebook fan pages to promote with no cost. If you have a known brand it can attract followers easily. I grew a Facebook fan page from 0 to 5,000 followers in a year. I did it with no paid marketing and completely with social posts.

Who needs a Facebook fan page? I remember having to answer this question multiple times. While in my mind the benefits were clear but to others it wasn’t. I had to patiently explain Facebook would allow us to spread our brand message. It was a way for us to talk to individuals who were passionate about our product. By talking to these individuals we could understand how they perceived our brand and if it matched what we wanted it to be.

I’ve been on plenty of projects that start off with someone pulling up another company’s website and asking for us to create something similar.  You ask them why they want the website to look like this other company’s and it’s because they just like the way it looks.

To make the creation of a new website smoother the first thing that needs be done is figure out the websites intent.  What issue are you trying to solve by creating or redesigning your company website? I would say 90% of web projects don’t have an answer to this question.  Answer to these types of questions will help the team figure out what text needs to be written and the tools that need to be created.

Examples of issues that help a team to understand the intentions of the redesign.

  • Customers are saying they cannot complete the checkout process when purchasing products.  Due to this issue we have seen an increase in customers calling the customer service phone line for assistance.
  • We keep getting emails from customers that they can’t figure out where to purchase the products that we manufacture.
  • We are having trouble selling product XYZ and would like to come up with some potential ways to help customers become more aware of it.

When you start to focus more on the intentions or problem your creativity will be better on trying to come up with a solution.  Let the team designing the site come up with the solutions to the problem (not you).  A common mistake is coming to creative teams with the answer already and telling them to make what you requested.  Many times these team members have a lot more experience with designing technical/digital solutions and will think about things that you didn’t take into consideration when coming up with your solution.

I’ve had experience with multiple websites in the last five years. All of the websites have been corporate sites targeting a variety of users. What I’ve learned from these sites is brand strength carries a large amount of weight from a digital marketing perspective.

Each website that I have come into contact with has taught me many things. One of the lessons that I have learned is that there’s not one thing you must do well in digital marketing.  You must do many things well to find success in digital marketing.

Another lesson is to stop spending all of your time worrying about SEO.  You are a marketer, if you focus on writing the best messaging/content for your target audience they will learn how to find you.  Social media platforms give you extra options to help balance the ways to spread content.

Be willing to test the rules on what works and what doesn’t.  All of the things that you’ve read about don’t necessarily work.  You don’t want to spend all of your company budget on something that’s a waste of time.
